๐ŸGetting Started

You’re new to Kaos or to coached training in general. These are the questions everyone asks before their first class.

I’ve never done CrossFit before โ€” can I still join?

Absolutely. CrossFit is beginner-friendly and no prior experience is required. Every workout we program is scalable โ€” meaning our coaches adjust the weights, reps, and movements to match your current ability. You progress safely from day one, and the people training next to you might be on their first month or their tenth year.

Do you offer a intro class or trial class?

Yes โ€” your first drop-in at Kaos is free. Book directly through our intro class link, show up 10 minutes early, and a coach will walk you through what to expect. No payment required, no pressure, no sales pitch. Just try a class and see if Kaos is your fit.

What should I bring and wear to my first class?

Wear comfortable training shoes (anything athletic โ€” flat-soled shoes like Nano or Metcon are ideal but not required), shorts or leggings, and a t-shirt. Bring a water bottle. We’ll handle everything else โ€” equipment, programming, and coaching.

How fit do I need to be before I start?

You don’t. The most common reason people delay starting is feeling like they should “get in shape first.” That’s exactly backwards โ€” coached training is how you get in shape. Our coaches scale every workout, so your first month is about learning movements and building consistency, not crushing PRs.

I’m coming back from injury โ€” is Kaos the right place?

Often yes, but it depends on the injury and stage of recovery. Our coaches scale around injuries every day, and we share a building with Pelvico Health Centre (pelvic floor physiotherapy) and have relationships with RMTs and physiotherapists across HRM. For complex return-to-sport cases, Jenn at GRND Athletics specializes in rehab-to-performance programming. Email us at info@kaoscrossfit.ca with your situation and we’ll point you in the right direction.

What’s the difference between Kaos and a regular gym?

A regular gym sells you access to equipment and leaves you to figure it out. Kaos sells you coached programming โ€” every class is led by a credentialed coach, every workout is part of a deliberate progression, and you don’t need to plan your own training. Most regular-gym memberships are cheaper; the value at Kaos is the coaching and community, not the floor space.

๐Ÿ’ณPricing & Billing

Memberships, billing cycles, freezes, and the rules around cancellation. Full pricing details on the pricing page.

How much does a membership at Kaos CrossFit cost?

CrossFit memberships start at $70 bi-weekly (8 classes per month) or $86 bi-weekly (unlimited). Olympic Weightlifting starts at $40 bi-weekly. Teens (under 18) start at $50 bi-weekly. Full pricing details and sign-up links are on our pricing page.

What does “bi-weekly billing” actually mean?

You’re billed every 2 weeks (26 payments per year). For our Unlimited membership at $86 bi-weekly, that averages roughly $186/month ($86 ร— 26 รท 12). We use bi-weekly because it aligns with most pay cycles and avoids the surprise hit of full monthly charges. Billing runs through Chalk It Pro with your card on file.

Is there an initiation fee or long-term contract?

No initiation fee. No contract. You can cancel with 14 days’ written notice anytime. We don’t believe in trapping members โ€” if it’s not working for you, leave on good terms.

Can I freeze my membership for travel, injury, or deployment?

Yes. Membership holds are available for medical reasons, extended travel of 2+ weeks, and military deployments. Email info@kaoscrossfit.ca with your dates and situation โ€” we handle holds case-by-case to keep things fair.

What’s the difference between a Punch Pass and a recurring membership?

A membership is a recurring bi-weekly subscription with ongoing access. A Punch Pass is a one-time purchase of 10 sessions (HYROX $170, Olympic Weightlifting $120) with no expiry and no recurring billing. Best for athletes whose schedules don’t fit a regular cadence, or for testing a discipline before committing.

Can I stack disciplines โ€” CrossFit plus Olympic Weightlifting?

Yes. Many serious athletes hold both: CrossFit Unlimited ($86 bi-weekly) for CrossFit + HYROX classes, plus Weightlifting Unlimited ($50 bi-weekly) for platform access, Sunday class, and Friday Night at the Bar. Talk to us about a combined arrangement if you’re committing long-term.

How do I cancel my Kaos membership?

Email info@kaoscrossfit.ca with “Cancellation Request” in the subject line. We require 14 days’ notice from the date of the email โ€” that’s our only requirement. No exit fees, no exit interview, no friction.

๐Ÿ’ชCrossFit

Questions about CrossFit specifically โ€” methodology, programming, and what daily training at Kaos looks like.

What programming do you follow at Kaos CrossFit?

We follow HWPO (Hard Work Pays Off) programming, the system built by Mat Fraser (5x CrossFit Games Champion) and his team. It’s designed for steady, measurable progress whether you’re a beginner or experienced lifter. Our coaches adapt HWPO to scale appropriately for everyone in class. Full CrossFit page โ†’

What is CrossFit actually?

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements executed at high intensity across broad time and modal domains. In plain English: a different workout every day, using movements like squats, deadlifts, presses, running, rowing, and gymnastics, performed at a pace that produces real fitness adaptations. The goal is broad capability โ€” being good at most things, not exceptional at one.

What does a typical CrossFit class at Kaos look like?

60 minutes. Warm-up (8โ€“10 min), skill or strength work (15โ€“20 min), the “WOD” or workout-of-the-day (10โ€“20 min), and cool-down/stretch. Class size is capped to allow individual coaching attention. Every movement is demoed by the coach, scaled to your level, and corrected in real time.

How often should I train CrossFit per week?

For most people: 3โ€“5 days per week. Two classes a week builds the habit and slow progress. Three to five hits the sweet spot where you see measurable changes in 8โ€“12 weeks. Beyond five days/week works for experienced athletes with good recovery, but isn’t necessary for general fitness.

Will I get bulky from CrossFit?

For most people, no. Building significant muscle mass requires deliberate hypertrophy programming, high caloric intake, and years of consistency. CrossFit builds strength and conditioning โ€” you’ll get stronger and leaner before you ever look “bulky.” If lean strength is the goal, our coaches will program accordingly.

How is Kaos different from other Halifax CrossFit gyms?

Three things: (1) HWPO programming (most gyms write their own โ€” we run the same system as elite athletes worldwide), (2) Multi-discipline access โ€” your CrossFit membership includes HYROX, and you can stack Olympic Weightlifting cheaply, (3) Multi-tenant ecosystem โ€” Pelvico (pelvic health), Cardinal/Primo/GRND (personal training), all operating in the same building. You don’t get that anywhere else in HRM.

๐ŸƒHYROX

Kaos is one of only four official HYROX Training Clubs in Halifax, and our head coach holds HYROX Academy Level 1 certification โ€” the highest credential HYROX issues. Questions about race prep and the discipline.

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a global indoor fitness race blending endurance running with functional workouts. The format is the same worldwide: 8 rounds of 1km run + 1 functional workout (ski erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer carries, sandbag lunges, wall balls). Race times typically run 60โ€“90 minutes. Full HYROX page โ†’

Is Kaos officially affiliated with HYROX?

Yes โ€” Kaos is an official HYROX Training Club (HYROX’s term for affiliated coaching facilities). Shawn Quigley holds HYROX Academy Level 1 certification, the highest training credential HYROX issues. Halifax has four official HYROX Training Clubs in total.

Do I need to be a runner to do HYROX at Kaos?

No, but you’ll become one. HYROX is roughly 50% running by time, so our programming builds your aerobic engine. People who arrive as “not runners” routinely finish their first HYROX race surprised by their own running ability. Scaling is built in โ€” you can walk the 1km legs at first if needed.

How is HYROX different from CrossFit?

CrossFit is constantly varied โ€” every workout is different. HYROX is the opposite โ€” the exact same 8 stations every race, every time. CrossFit builds broad fitness; HYROX builds race-specific fitness. They complement each other well, which is why both are included in our standard membership.

Can I do HYROX without signing up for a race?

Yes. Many of our HYROX members never race โ€” they just like the format. It’s structured, measurable, and the workouts are great fitness regardless of whether you compete. That said, if you’re race-curious, we coach toward HYROX Halifax (typically January) and HYROX Toronto (typically October) every year.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธOlympic Weightlifting

Snatch and Clean & Jerk. Coached by 3 NCCP Comp Dev-credentialed coaches โ€” the deepest Olympic Weightlifting coaching staff in Atlantic Canada.

Can I do Olympic Weightlifting at Kaos without doing CrossFit?

Yes. We offer Olympic-Weightlifting-only memberships starting at $40 bi-weekly. You get access to our platforms, our Sunday large-format class (coached by an NCCP Comp Dev trained coach), and Friday Night at the Bar โ€” our social lifting club.

What’s “Friday Night at the Bar”?

Our Friday evening social lifting session โ€” open platforms, music, lifters at all levels working on snatch and clean & jerk, with a coach on the floor. It’s the lowest-pressure way to experience Olympic Weightlifting and most members say it’s their favourite night of the week. Full Olympic Weightlifting page โ†’

What does NCCP Comp Dev mean?

NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) Competition Development is the second-highest Olympic Weightlifting coaching credential in Canada. It signals a coach has been trained to develop competitive lifters, not just teach the basics. Most Olympic Weightlifting gyms in Atlantic Canada have one NCCP Comp Dev coach if any โ€” Kaos has three.

I’m new to weightlifting โ€” can I still join the Oly program?

Yes. Our Sunday class is mixed-level โ€” coaches scale everything from positional drills (PVC pipe to start) up to advanced competition lifts. You won’t be the only beginner. Many of our current competitive lifters started with zero barbell experience.

What’s Primo Weightlifting, and how does it relate to Kaos?

Primo Weightlifting is a separate company run by JP, one of our coaches, focused exclusively on Olympic Weightlifting personal training. They operate inside Kaos and use our platforms, but pricing and programming are independent. Think of it as a specialist option layered on top of our standard Olympic Weightlifting program.

๐Ÿ‘คPersonal Training

Three independent specialists operate at Kaos โ€” Cardinal Performance, Primo Weightlifting, and GRND Athletics. Each sets their own pricing and approach.

Do you offer personal training at Kaos?

Yes. Three independent personal trainers operate at Kaos, each with their own company and specialty: Catherine (Cardinal Performance โ€” injury management & general PT), JP (Primo Weightlifting โ€” Olympic lifting), and Jenn (GRND Athletics & Performance โ€” sport-specific athletic development). Full personal training page โ†’

How is Personal Training billed?

Each trainer invoices their clients directly, not through Kaos. Email the trainer whose specialty matches your goal and they’ll quote pricing based on session frequency and program length. None of them are Kaos employees โ€” they’re independent specialists who lease coaching time at our facility.

Which trainer should I work with?

It depends on the goal. Injury management, post-physio bridging, beginner-friendly inclusive coaching, or general personal training โ†’ Catherine. Olympic Weightlifting, strength sport, or competitive lifting โ†’ JP. Sport-specific performance, return-to-sport, or general athletic development โ†’ Jenn. There’s a Match Your Goal guide on the Personal Training page if you want help deciding.

Do I need to be a Kaos member to do Personal Training?

No. PT clients don’t need a Kaos membership โ€” they’re working directly with the independent trainer. Many PT-only clients eventually add a Kaos class membership once their movement competency is built, but that’s optional and never pressured.

Can I combine Personal Training with regular CrossFit classes?

Yes โ€” and many members do. A common pattern: 1โ€“2 PT sessions per week with one of our specialists (focused on your specific weak points or goals) plus 2โ€“3 group CrossFit classes per week for conditioning and community. Talk to the trainer about how to structure the week.

๐Ÿ“ŠInBody Body Composition Scans

Clinical-grade body composition analysis using the InBody 270. Measures muscle mass, body fat percentage, segmental analysis, and visceral fat in 60 seconds.

What is an InBody scan?

The InBody 270 is a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device that measures your body composition by sending micro-currents through your body. In 60 seconds it gives you: total muscle mass, body fat percentage, segmental analysis (arms, legs, torso), visceral fat level, and intracellular vs. extracellular water. It’s the gold standard for non-clinical body composition tracking. Full InBody page โ†’

How much does an InBody scan cost?

$49.99 for a single scan (non-members) or $29.99 for active Kaos members. No appointment-only days โ€” book online and come in.

How often should I get scanned?

Every 8โ€“12 weeks for most goals. Body composition changes slowly โ€” scanning weekly produces noise rather than signal. The 8โ€“12 week interval captures real trends: muscle gain, fat loss, recovery from injury. Some athletes scan every 4 weeks during competition prep.

How accurate is the InBody compared to DEXA?

DEXA is the clinical reference standard (~1% margin). InBody 270 is typically within 2โ€“4% of DEXA for body fat percentage, with very high consistency scan-to-scan. The key value is consistency โ€” even if there’s a small absolute error, the trend over multiple scans is highly reliable.

Do I need to prep for an InBody scan?

For best accuracy: don’t eat or drink for 2โ€“3 hours before, no exercise for 3+ hours before, empty your bladder, and remove jewelry and socks. Try to scan at the same time of day each visit (morning is best). If you can’t hit all of these, the scan is still useful โ€” just be consistent across visits.

๐ŸฉบClinical Services

On-site clinical care via Pelvico Health Centre and other independent partners. Direct billing available for most major insurers, including CAF/VAC via Medavie Blue Cross.

What clinical services are available at Kaos?

Pelvico Health Centre operates inside Kaos at Suite 5, offering pelvic floor physiotherapy specifically tailored to active individuals (postpartum, return-to-sport, prolapse, incontinence, painful intercourse). Additional clinicians (RMTs and others) operate periodically โ€” see the full clinical services page for the current roster.

Are these services Kaos employees?

No. Every clinician at Kaos is an independent practitioner with their own practice, license, and billing. Pelvico Health Centre is its own company โ€” they share our building and serve our community, but operate independently. This matters legally (clinical care is regulated separately from fitness coaching) and practically (insurance billing goes through their practice, not Kaos).

Do you accept Medavie Blue Cross or other insurance?

Kaos training memberships are fitness services and aren’t typically covered by insurance. However, clinical services delivered inside our facility by Pelvico (pelvic floor physiotherapy) often are. Pelvico direct-bills most major insurers including Medavie Blue Cross for CAF members and veterans.

How do I book with Pelvico?

Book directly through Pelvico’s online portal at pelvico.janeapp.com or call them at 902-332-8534. You don’t need to be a Kaos member, and you don’t need to coordinate with Kaos at all โ€” just show up at the appointment.

Why does a CrossFit gym have a pelvic health clinic in it?

Because the people training at Kaos โ€” especially the postpartum athletes and CAF members โ€” were having pelvic health issues that mainstream physiotherapy wasn’t addressing well. We connected with Pelvico, agreed they should serve our community on-site, and they’ve been operating in Suite 5 since. The result: athletes get specialized care from someone who understands their training, and there’s no friction between “the gym” and “the clinic.”

๐Ÿ‘ฆTeens & Family

Teens pricing (18 and under) is designed to make coached training accessible for families. Same coaches, same methodology, family-friendly rates.

What age range does the Teens program serve?

Teens pricing is available for athletes 18 years of age or younger. Younger kids (typically 13+) integrate well into the program with parental sign-off. For kids under 13, we work with families case-by-case โ€” email info@kaoscrossfit.ca with your child’s age and we’ll find the right fit.

How much does the Teens program cost?

$50 bi-weekly for 8 classes per month, $70 bi-weekly for unlimited classes. Substantially discounted from adult rates because we believe physical literacy in adolescence pays dividends for the next 60 years.

Are teens in adult classes, or do they have their own?

Teens train alongside adults in our regular CrossFit and HYROX classes โ€” coaches scale movements appropriately for the athlete in front of them, regardless of age. Many parents tell us the multi-generational class environment is one of their favorite parts of the program. We also run occasional teen-focused workshops during school breaks.

Can my teen come without me being a member?

Yes. Teen memberships are independent โ€” parents don’t need a Kaos membership for their child to train. Many of our teens come because their parents searched for “where can my kid learn to lift safely” and decided they’d rather have credentialed coaches than a YouTube routine.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆMilitary & Veterans

Kaos was founded by a CAF veteran, located 20 minutes from CFB Halifax / Stadacona. We serve serving members and veterans with specific programs and direct billing where possible.

Does Kaos offer a military or veteran discount?

We extend consideration to CAF members, veterans, and first responders on a case-by-case basis. Email info@kaoscrossfit.ca with your situation. We’re a veteran-founded gym and we take this community seriously โ€” but the bigger financial lever for serving members and veterans is the direct billing through Pelvico (below).

Is there direct billing for CAF and VAC?

Yes โ€” but through Pelvico Health Centre (clinical) not through Kaos (fitness). Pelvico direct-bills Medavie Blue Cross for CAF members and VAC (Veterans Affairs Canada) for veterans. If pelvic health, postpartum recovery, or related care is part of your needs, this can substantially offset the cost of your training journey.

I’m posted to Halifax temporarily โ€” can I train at Kaos for a short period?

Absolutely. Your first drop-in is free. After that, the 1-Week Traveller pass ($60) gives unlimited classes for 7 consecutive days โ€” best value for short TDs. For longer postings (3+ months), the standard month-to-month memberships work with no contract lock-in.

How close is Kaos to CFB Halifax / Stadacona?

20 minutes by car from CFB Halifax (Stadacona), 30 minutes from Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ). Strong commuter access from Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville, and downtown Halifax. Full directions โ†’

๐Ÿ“Logistics

Address, parking, hours, and the practical details of getting to Kaos.

Where is Kaos CrossFit located in Halifax?

Kaos CrossFit is in Bayers Lake Business Park at 114 Chain Lake Drive, Suite 5, Halifax NS B3S 1B1 โ€” just minutes from downtown Halifax with easy highway access. We’re 15 minutes from downtown, 20 minutes from CFB Halifax / Stadacona, and 30 minutes from the Halifax Stanfield Airport.

What are your hours and class schedule?

The facility is open from 5:30 AM to 7:30 PM Mondayโ€“Friday with limited weekend hours. Classes run early morning, lunch, and evening Mondayโ€“Saturday, with Sunday programming for Olympic Weightlifting and Open Gym. Full live schedule: kaoscrossfit.ca/schedule.

Is there parking at the gym?

Yes โ€” ample free parking directly in front of the gym at 114 Chain Lake Drive. No parking meters, no garage fees, no time limits during gym hours. Bayers Lake is laid out for retail/commercial, so parking is generous.

Do you have showers and change rooms?

Yes โ€” full change rooms with showers for both men and women. Bring your own toiletries (we don’t stock soap/shampoo on-site) and a towel. Many members come straight from work, shower at the gym, and head out โ€” it’s set up for that flow.

Is the gym accessible for people with mobility limitations?

The main floor is single-level and accessible by wheelchair. Change rooms are accessible. If you have specific accessibility questions โ€” equipment heights, programming scaling, or facility access โ€” email info@kaoscrossfit.ca and we’ll talk through what your training would look like.

๐ŸขOur Ecosystem

Kaos is one of 5 organizations operating at 114 Chain Lake Drive. Here’s how the ecosystem works.

Who else operates inside Kaos?

Four independent partner organizations: Pelvico Health Centre (pelvic floor physiotherapy, Suite 5), Cardinal Performance (Catherine โ€” injury management & general personal training), Primo Weightlifting (JP โ€” Olympic Weightlifting personal training), and GRND Athletics & Performance (Jenn โ€” sport-specific athletic development).

Why is Kaos a multi-tenant facility instead of just a gym?

Because the athletes training at Kaos need more than just classes โ€” they need specialist coaching, pelvic health care, body composition tracking, and rehab support. Instead of building all of that in-house, we partnered with the best independent practitioners in each area and gave them space at 114 Chain Lake Drive. The result: under one roof, our community has access to expertise that would normally require visiting 4โ€“5 different locations.

Is Pelvico Health Centre owned by Kaos?

No โ€” Pelvico is a separate company with its own ownership, licensing, and billing. They operate inside our building at Suite 5, but they’re independent. The relationship is partnership-based: we refer our community to them; they refer their patients to us. We share space and values, not ownership.
